Hadith part 7: Fairy tales, absurdities and contradictions in the Sihah
Previous          Next

We have seen the kind of narrations that the Sihah have to offer to the world: narrations that are an insult to Allah, to his prophets and in particular to the greatest of prophets, Muhammad, to the purified household of the prophet. As if this was not enough, the Sihah also offer refuge to narrations that mock the Islamic faith and serve as a weapon to question the rational, integrity and credibility of this religion. It is with the presence of these kind of narrations that the scholars wish to invite people to Islam!!! Does not the presence of such spurious narrations in the hadith books mean that they are considered genuine narrations, mainly by their authors?? Well let's see how logical they are.

It is reported that a cow and a wolf spoke to some of the companions. If a non-Muslim reads these narrations, he would have the impression that he is reading a fairy-tale book. He would certainly question what such narrations are doing in a book that is supposed to report traditions about the creed of Islam. I have been asking myself the same question! These narrations are just a slander to the Islamic faith. What's worse is that they are attributed to the prophets. Whether these narrations are truly narrated by Abu Huraira or not, they don't belong here! They are a disgrace and disrespect to the prophet.

I would not be surprised if I learned that these narrations were the work of Umayyads, who never believed in the prophethood of Muhammad (pbuh&hf) and whose duty was to mock Islam and stray the Muslims off the right path.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "While a man was riding a cow, it turned towards him and said, 'I have not been created for this purpose (i.e. carrying), I have been created for sloughing." The Prophet added, "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar believe in the story." The Prophet went on, "A wolf caught a sheep, and when the shepherd chased it, the wolf said, 'Who will be its guard on the day of wild beasts, when there will be no shepherd for it except me?' "After narrating it, the Prophet said, "I, Abu Bakr and 'Umar too believe it." Abu Salama (a sub-narrator) said, "Abu Bakr and 'Umar were not present then." (It has been written that a wolf also spoke to one of the companions of the Prophet near Medina as narrated in Fatah-al-Bari:

Narrated Unais bin 'Amr: Ahban bin Aus said, "I was amongst my sheep. Suddenly a wolf caught a sheep and I shouted at it. The wolf sat on its tail and addressed me, saying, 'Who will look after it (i.e. the sheep) when you will be busy and not able to look after it? Do you forbid me the provision which Allah has provided me?' " Ahban added, "I clapped my hands and said, 'By Allah, I have never seen anything more curious and wonderful than this!' On that the wolf said, 'There is something (more curious) and wonderful than this; that is, Allah's Apostle in those palm trees, inviting people to Allah (i.e. Islam).' "Unais bin 'Amr further said, "Then Ahban went to Allah's Apostle and informed him what happened and embraced Islam.)" palm trees or other trees and share the fruits with me."

Narrated Abu Huraira: Once Allah's Apostle; offered the morning prayer and then faced the people and said, "While a man was driving a cow, he suddenly rode over it and beat it. The cow said, "We have not been created for this, but we have been created for sloughing." On that the people said astonishingly, "Glorified be Allah! A cow speaks!" The Prophet said, "I believe this, and Abu Bakr and 'Umar too, believe it, although neither of them was present there. While a person was amongst his sheep, a wolf attacked and took one of the sheep. The man chased the wolf till he saved it from the wolf, where upon the wolf said, 'You have saved it from me; but who will guard it on the day of the wild beasts when there will be no shepherd to guard them except me (because of riots and afflictions)? ' " The people said surprisingly, "Glorified be Allah! A wolf speaks!" The Prophet said, "But I believe this, and Abu Bakr and 'Umar too, believe this, although neither of them was present there." What about contradicting narrations about a practice that was performed on a daily basis!!!

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet performed ablution by washing the body parts only once.
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 159, Book: Ablutions

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zaid: The Prophet performed ablution by washing the body parts twice.
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 160, Book: Ablutions

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zaid: Once Allah's Apostle came to us and we brought out water for him in a brass pot. He performed ablution thus: He washed his face thrice, and his forearms to the elbows twice, then passed his wet hands lightly over the head from front to rear and brought them to front again and washed his feet (up to the ankles).

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 4, Number 196, Book: Ablutions

So how many times are we supposed to wash our body parts during the wudu'? Once, twice or thrice?? Or will any number do?? Is this what the companions learned? Or is this what Bukhary chose to transmit to us??? Some scholars will go as far as authenticating all of them to remove any contradictions, thus preserving the integrity and credibility of the authors of these corrupted books!!

Here is an absurdity that does not necessitate my comments, with a contradiction to the absurdity:

Abu Sa'id Khudri reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) warned against drinking while standing.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 023, Number 5020, Book of Drinks

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: None of you should drink while standing; and if anyone forgets, he must vomit.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 023, Number 5022, Book of Drinks

Ibn Abbas reported: I served. (water of) Zamzam to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), and he drank it while standing.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 023, Number 5023, Book of Drinks

In the first two narrations, the prophet warns against drinking while standing, and if we forgetfully do it, we have to vomit it. Yet, in the third narration, the prophet himself drank while standing. Not only the narration does not make sense, but it is contradicted by another one. Does this not constitute an insult on the prophet. Would the prophet contradict himself? Would the prophet advise us to do something that he himself does not do, thus breaking his advice?? IS NOT THIS HYPOCRISY???? Another weapon for those who hate Islam. How can someone enter Islam when the books of hadith contain so many absurdities and lies??? How can we understand the Quran when we rely on such books???

Here are some narrations that are an insult to women, the first of which Aisha rejected:

Narrated `Aisha: The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, "Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people)." I said, "You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away. for I disliked to face him."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 9, Number 490, Book of Virtues of the Prayer Hall

Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Had it not been for Eve, woman would have never acted unfaithfully towards her husband.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3471, Book of Marriage

Hammam b. Munabbih said: These are some of the ahadith which Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), and one of these (this one): Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Had it not been for Bani Isra'il, food would not have become stale, and meal would not have gone bad; and had it not been for Eve, a woman would never have acted unfaithfully toward her husband.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 008, Number 3472, Book of Marriage

Islam has elevated the status of women and not the other way around. The Quran has never blamed Eve for anything. Abu Huraira, the ignorant and hadith fabricator did. It is Christianity which claims that sins are inherited from Adam and Eve (atonement) and not Islam. In Islam, each soul is responsible for its acts and only its acts:

Quran 6:164
Say: "Shall I seek for (my) Cherisher other than Allah, when He is the Cherisher of all things (that exist)? Every soul draws the meed of its acts on none but itself: no bearer of burdens can bear of burdens can bear the burden of another. Your goal in the end is towards Allah: He will tell you the truth of the things wherein ye disputed."

The killing of dogs, another absurdity:

Ibn 'Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) ordered to kill dogs, and he sent (men) to the corners of Medina that they should be killed.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 10, Number 3810, Book of Transactions

Abdullah (b. Umar) (Allah be pleased with them) reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) ordered the killing of dogs and we would send (men) in Medina and its corners and we did not spare any dog that we did not kill, so much so that we killed the dog that accompanied the wet she-camel belonging to the people of the desert.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 10, Number 3811, Book of Transactions

Abu Zubair heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Allah be pleased with him) saying: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) ordered us to kill dogs, and we carried out this order so much so that we also kill the dog coming with a woman from the desert. Then Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) forbade their killing. He (the Holy Prophet further) said: It is your duty the jet-black (dog) having two spots (on the eyes), for it is a devil.

Many other absurdities such as satan urinates in your ears, satan laughs when you yawn and enter through your mouth:

Narrated `Abdullah ibn Masu'ud : A person was mentioned before the Prophet (p.b.u.h) and he was told that he had kept on sleeping till morning and had not got up for the prayer. The Prophet said, "Satan urinated in his ears."
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 21, Number 245, Book of Tahajjud

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Allah loves sneezing but dislikes yawning; so if anyone of you sneezes and then praises Allah, every Muslim who hears him (praising Allah) has to say Tashmit to him. But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so if one of you yawns, he should try his best to stop it, for when anyone of you yawns, Satan laughs at him."
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 245, Book of al-Adab

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him."
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 509, Book of Beginning of Creation

The son of Abu Said al-Khudri reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: When one of you yawns, he should try to restrain it with cue help of his hand since it is the Satan that enters therein.
References:
Sahih Muslim, Book 042, Number 7131, Book of Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqa'iq

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night."
References:
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 516, Book of Beginning of Creation

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 11, Number 582, Book of adhan

The crying of the baby:

Narrated Sa`id bin Al-Musaiyab: Abu Huraira said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'There is none born among the off-spring of Adam, but Satan touches it. A child therefore, cries loudly at the time of birth because of the touch of Satan, except Mary and her child." Then Abu Huraira recited: "And I seek refuge with You for her and for her offspring from the outcast Satan"

Eat the fly if it falls in your drink:

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said "If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease."

There are several more alike. Such are the narrations in books that Muslims consider SAHIH!! How could these narrations be considered SAHIH when they insult Allah, the prophets, women, when they contradict the Quran and are absurd??? If they are not considered SAHIH, then what are they still in those books??? Are these the teachings of the prophet or the fabrications of the enemies of Islam??
